Concussion Treatment Doctor

If you have had a blow to the head or a head injury, you may need to see a doctor to determine if you have a concussion. When this type of head injury occurs, it requires specialized treatment to ensure that the problem is not made worse.

Causes

A concussion can be caused when your head is involved in a violent blow or a violent shaking. This can occur when you fall, are involved in a sports accident, or in a car crash. Although the fluid in your head will normally protect the brain, a more violent action will cause your brain to hit your skull, which is what causes this problem.

Symptoms

There are many symptoms that indicate you need to see a doctor for an examination and treatment. They should not be neglected because it may result in bleeding of the brain, which could be fatal. Watching the individual who may have suffered a blow to the head is important, because the symptoms can quickly become worse. The primary symptoms are mental confusion and drowsiness.

Other symptoms may include:

  • Sleeping more than usual
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Unable to remember new information
  • A headache
  • Having problems with balance
  • More emotional than usual
  • No energy

Symptoms may not occur immediately. A symptom such as a headache may not occur until a month later. Some of the symptoms can last for weeks or even months after the injury has occurred.

Dangers of a Second Injury

When this type of brain injury occurs, it is necessary for complete healing to take place before engaging in further activities. This is especially true if it is sports related. If a second injury occurs before the first one is healed, it could result in brain swelling that is fatal.

Rest Is Necessary

Instead of continuing on as usual after symptoms are evident and a diagnosis is obtained, rest is part of the normal treatment. Rest is essential because doing tasks that require mental concentration will often aggravate the symptoms. This includes things like reading, using a computer, playing video games, doing schoolwork, texting, and more.

Getting the right amount of rest will let the brain heal and your brain chemicals get back to normal. Under a doctor’s supervision, you will be instructed as to when it is safe to start light physical duty. Students may be required to have shorter school days and fewer assignments.

Medications

When a brain injury like this has occurred, it may not be safe to take certain medications for headaches and other problems. Over the counter medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin may only increase the possibility of further bleeding. A doctor should be consulted to ensure safe medications.
